I don’t know if you’re going to be buying the latest iPhone 5 — or any other new cellphone — sometime soon.  But I want to share an important reminder if you’re thinking of doing so and won’t be keeping your current cellphone.  This seems like a good time for this kind of reminder given the long lines outside of Apple stores.

You will need to make sure you’ve deleted any and all private and personal information on your current cellphone before you give it away, sell it or trade it in.  Here are a few key tips:

  • Take out the SIM card from your current cellphone;
  • Backup your personal information and data on your computer and/or in a “cloud”; and
  • Erase everything in the memory of your current cellphone.

Jason Gilbert wrote an excellent article recently discussing in greater detail the various steps people should take to make sure their cellphones are cleared before disposing of them.  His article is titled “Sell Your iPhone And Prepare It for Trade-In: A User’s Guide” and can be found at: http://www.huffington.post.

While these steps may seem obvious, they can get overlooked in the rush to start using a new cellphone.  You don’t want to unintentional give away more than just a cellphone when you sell, trade or donate it.
